Currently Massachusetts residents and companies have a particularly cost effective opportunity for installing a solar energy system. The state has mandated that Massachusetts utility companies obtain 15% of their energy from renewable resources by 2020. As the owner of a solar energy producing solar system, you can sell Solar Renewable Energy Certificates, or SRECs, to the utility company. One SREC can be sold for every 1 MWh produced by the system. These SRECs sold for the first time in July 2010 for $500 each. This price was well over the estimated price of about $300 per SREC, and shows a healthy start to what should be one of the healthiest and most robust SREC markets in the nation.
